Stupid Food Complaints

This post, despite it's content, is not inspired by my working at a restaurant now. It actually happens to be inspired by different cooking competition shows that my mom watches and is basically just a list of stupid food complaints things I've heard.

I know people like things cooked differently. Some people like things with salt and others don't. Some people don't like fish. That's okay and I'm not trying to insult that. What I am trying to point out is that if you're going to eat something and you know what you're eating, then you can't complain about a stupid little thing because you have to find a flaw.

"This black fish is too fishy."
That's like saying "Oh, I don't like steak because it's made of cow." or "I don't like chicken because it tastes chicken-y." Dude. Fish is going to taste fishy.

"This isn't salty enough."
Then pick up the salt shaker that is two inches away from you and add salt. You're reaching a whole new level of laziness when you can't put salt on your own food.

"The wine left too much of a taste." automatically followed by "The wine didn't leave enough of a taste."
Are they supposed to eat your food and read your mind to make sure it's exactly how you want it? It's not their fault you're so picky.

"This is too spicy." (not normally a stupid complaint but it is in this context)
Well, a spicy pepper is one of the secret ingredients that are required for the competition, so I would expect it to not be spicy at all...

"This smoked scallop is too smoky."
Said the person tasting what appeared to be unseasoned scallops...

What complaints bug you?

  1. What drives me crazy is when my partner uses a ton of hot sauce and/or spices to make a food insanely hot that is not. by nature, a spicy food. Like mac and cheese. Why are you pouring taco spice and hot sauce on mac and cheese? If you want to eat a spicy food, cook one, don't cook mac and cheese and then try to fundamentally alter what it is.
I know it's his food and his mouth and whatever, it totally shouldn't matter to me. But something about it drives me NUTS.

    1. That's so weird. I've never heard of spicy mac and cheese. I don't understand it at all... it's so weird though holy crap.

  2. Since I'll eat just about anything, it always baffles me when people are picky. One of my best friends is the pickiest adult eater I've ever seen. She went to France, where they have some of the most delicious food I've ever eaten, and only ate convenience foods in her hotel room, because she wouldn't try the food! Good thing we were not on the same trip, because that would have driven me nuts. That's one of the things I love about traveling is experiencing all of the local cuisines. And that is why she and I will never travel together :)

    1. I'm not really that picky of a person. I'm willing to try almost anything (unless it's alive, bloody, or a bug) so I don't understand why some people are so picky. I mean, I'm picky about how steak and such are cooked (I don't like any pink) but I'm not going to make a big deal if there's a little pink as long as it is fully cooked.

That's crazy though, that she won't try anything new. I've never really had French food but I've heard it's amazing. At least try something new when you're in a new place!

    1. My mom really likes Cupcake Wars, Chopped, Sweet Genius, and Iron Chef. We both like Master Chef and Hell's Kitchen. If you want to check any out, those are probably your best bet. haha Glad you like it though!

  4. The doctor told my husband he needs to eat more seafood. Since my husband is the one who cooks, this means that I, too, need to eat more seafood. I don't like food that looks like it does when it's still alive (except for shrimp). I also don't like fish that's "too fishy." Fortunately for me, there is actually non-fishy fish out there that I will eat. For my husband's sake, mind you.

    1. I can understand not liking the strong fish taste. I really wasn't trying to insult that. I was simply trying to say that if you're ordering a known fishy fish or something like that, there's no point in getting upset that the fish you ordered is fishy.

It's good that you are both eating healthier and that you have some fish that you don't mind eating, for him.

    2. I get you. There is no way I'd have salmon or something like that! I'm not a big fan of sushi, either. lol

    3. I'm not a big fan of salmon, but I'm willing to try it in different ways, since I've only had it in baked. I like some sushi though. Mainly the shrimp ones. haha

    1. That's crazy. It's going to suck when I actually become a server because I'm sure I'll learn a lot more stupid food complaints. On the bright side, maybe it'll be another post!

It isn't the sever's fault for how its cooked or how it tastes though, unless they literally bring the wrong order out. Yet, you never see cooks getting yelled at for it unless Gordon Ramsey is in the kitchen.

      I'm glad you like it!

  6. Now that you are working in a restaurant, you will start to get a peek at what it is like to work with the public. The complaints can get insane and you just have to smile and apologize. If you haven't seen them yet, just wait.

    1. I don't really speak with the customers that much now, but I'm just waiting to hear some of the complaints. One of the families that I ran food to kept telling me how amazing it looked. Ten minutes later, they started sending the dishes back one by one for various complaints. I thought the server was going to punch somebody because it was so ridiculous.

  7. Oh my gosh! I do not know what happened! I meant to hit reply and I guess I deleted my comment! I am just going to comment again :) Sorry Rachel!
I get that all the time! We serve burgers, and people are always asking for us to cook them medium rare. We are basically "fast food" in a hotel. So we do not actually cook them they come pre-cooked. They get mad at me for having pre-cooked burgers... Not my fault it's just how it is!
This is almost as bad as reading home direct complaints. I hate it when people constantly just complain about something rather than "deal" with what they have.
I really liked this post thanks for sharing!

    1. Oh also last night we had a person come in and ask for popcorn to watch the football game (since we do this for a NFL promo). He complained that we didn't have it out (we were SUPER BUSY), he said he would be back down. Then when we did have it out he didn't come back!

    2. hahaha It's okay! Don't worry about it. I think it's sweet that you took the time to write it out again!

Wow. It sounds like that guy was just looking for ways to cause trouble and complain because he could.
